Street food stalwart's shiny new restaurant is finally ready to go

Nine months after emerging victorious from a year-long street food competition at The Kitchens in Spinningfields, the team behind Beastro - master butcher James, chef/mouthpiece Richard and sausage queen Heather - are finally ready to open the doors to their meaty and much-anticipated first restaurant.

The trio - who have become stalwarts of the city's street food scene, manning stalls at countless festivals and events under guises such as Bangers & Bacon and Well Hung (as well as peddling their own brand of sausages, 'Bobby's Bangers') - have been awarded for their perseverance and social media nous with their own specially designed bistro, all paid for by landlords Allied London.

Not a bad gig.

The unit – which used to house three of the six competing street food traders in Leftbank – has been converted into a 45-cover urban farmhouse-style restaurant with dark grey walls, huge floor-to-ceiling windows and white and wood furniture. A chef’s table with bar stools surrounds two open kitchens (one for eating in and one for grab-and-go takeaway) separated by a walk around partition.

Such has been the sense of anticipation, the soft launch period between Monday 27 March and Wednesday 5 April, with 50% off food, completely sold out within a few days. Following softs the restaurant will officially launch to everyone else on Monday 8 April for breakfast, which will be served every day between at 7am and 12pm.

Beastro will offer two sizes of breakfast wrap and three full English options – including a totally vegan version. Early risers can also indulge in sweet or savoury pancake stacks, pastries and granola or more indulgent breakfasts such as eggs Benedict or the classic eggy bread.

Surprisingly for a venue strong on carnivorous courses, they will also offer some interesting vegetarian options, fish dishes and even a vegan breakfast featuring the Bury Black Pudding Company’s brand new veggie black pudding (made with black beans).

Lunch (served between 12-4pm) customers will be able to choose from a sit down meal or grab a sandwich from the fridge. Take out sandwiches include some of the signature street food they’ve become known for, such as the Cubano or Philly cheese steak sandwich, which can be taken over the counter to be grilled. There will be a roast sandwich special every day as well as Beastro comfort dishes such as soup, stews and burgers. They will also serve coffee, tea and home baked cakes.

Thanks to James’s butchery background, there will be a number of carefully selected and aged steaks on offer including sirloin, rump and fillet, with many served on the bone. Dinner will be served from 4pm until 10pm with typical dishes including slow cooked oxtail with beetroot and pearl barley risotto, or curried cod with scallops on shallot puree.

The licensed restaurant will also offer a range of carefully chosen wines, beers and spirits. Beer from local brewers Shindigger will be on tap and although many of the wines have an amusing meaty theme, such as Wandering Beeste Syrah or Alexander vs The Ham Factory Ribera del Duero, they’ve all earned their place on the wine list.

During our look around, a buoyant Richard told us: “We don’t see ourselves as a special occasion place where customers eat twice a year. We want to be an all-day local venue where customers can pop-in for a snack or linger over a long meal.”
