These local food heroes are doing Sunday roasts to your door
Updated December 2020
As the government decides which tier Manchester will be placed in over winter, we're coming to terms with the possibility that it might be a very long time before restaurant and pub dining, as we know it, is given the green light. Depressing as that thought is, a positive is that restaurants have quickly adapted and some are offering dishes delivered to your door that haven't really been an option before. We want to celebrate that.
Here are some joints across Greater Manchester that are offering a slap up Sunday dinner for delivery or collection.
Who: Coal & Cotton
Where: 44 Leigh Road, Boothstown, Worsley, M28 1LR
Delivering?: Delivery ONLY, free within 5 miles
Price: From £11.95
Over in Worsley, Coal & Cotton have been bringing the glam (and the gin) with their home delivery service which includes cocktails to your door. Locals describe their roast dinner - prices start at £11.95 - as 'the best ever.' There's a choice of chicken, beef, lamb or a vegan beetroot and 'black pudding' Wellington with all the trimmings. Why not add a 'cheeky Vimto' to your order? An extensive wider menu is also available, see Facebook for details.
Who: Elnecot
Where: Cutting Room Square, 41 Blossom St, Ancoats, Manchester M4 6AJ
Delivering?: Contact them to check
Price: From £12 for a main course
At the moment, Elnecot are offering a pick-up service from their Ancoats restaurant - and may be delivering at certain times, best to contact them and ask. Michael Clay's roast dinners are the stuff of legends, in Ancoats at least. Choose from 28 day aged ribeye, lemon and thyme chicken, crispy pork belly or a vegan/veggie nut roast with a choice of starters and desserts. Prices start at £12 for a main course. There's also a wider menu which includes some small plates favourites like disco cabbage and a Manchester picnic.
Who: The Globe Inn, Wardle
Where: 218 Ramsden Rd, Wardle, Rochdale OL12 9NU
Delivering?: Locally
Price: From £5pp
This well-loved local pub in Rochdale is offering perhaps the cheapest delivered Sunday dinners on the lockdown market at £8 for a large one and £5 small with a simple choice of chicken or beef. This is part of a wider delivery menu of home-cooked pub-style dishes which also includes afternoon teas, pies and kids meals.
Who: The Lowry
Where: The Lowry Hotel, 50 Dearmans Pl, Salford M3 5LH
Delivering?: Yes - selected Greater Mcr postcodes
Price: £40 for four courses for two
The Lowry Hotel's River Restaurant is a firm favourite here at Confidentials HQ, especially with the gaffer (who we all know loves to grumble). Head chef Dave Ashton's Sunday lunch is one of the poshest cook at home versions in the city with monogrammed tissue paper and everything. It's a little more faff to put together than other RTE versions but not as complex as some of the cook at home boxes we've tried. Everything just needs warming through or assembling and you get a chance to be a bit fancy when plating up as you're provided with piping bags of various chef-prepped sauces. We loved the crayfish and prawn cocktail starter. The best news is, they are now delivering. (We tried it out here.)
Who: Piccolino
Where: Various branches
Delivering?: From certain branches only, see website
Price: £17.50pp
The glam Italian restaurant is back and has opened for collection and delivery from branches in Alderley Edge, Hale, Didsbury, Bramhall and Manchester city centre. Alongside their pizza, pasta and seafood dishes, there's an Italicised roast dinner available on Sundays for £17.50 per person with a choice of roast chicken or 28 day aged slow roast beef with roasties, greens, Yorkshire puds and gravy. It's pretty hard to resist their chocolatey desserts and tiramisu too.
Who: Sam's Chop House
Where: Back Pool Fold, Manchester M2 1HN
Delivery: £5 within 7 miles but will deliver further for more. Collection is free
Price: From £18.45 but currently on offer at ludicrously low prices
Sam's has never done delivery before, so Manchester was buzzing when they launched on Deliveroo with fish n chips, steak and kidney pudding and other core dishes. But the praiseworthy Sunday Service is where it's at, it's £18 a head with a choice of 28 day aged beef, roast and confit chicken or mushroom welly along with roasties, veg and the all important gravy and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. There's also a good selection from 'the best wine list in the city' curated by everyone's favourite sommelier George Bergier.
Who: The Sunday Roast Company
Where: Manchester City Centre
Delivery: City Centre Via Uber Eats
Price: From £9.50
Alex Markham set up The Sunday Roast Company in September 2019 because he struggled to find a decent Sunday roast that could be delivered. Available to order via Uber Eats, there's a choice of roast chicken, pork, beef or lamb with a cauliflower steak veggie/vegan option. All the meat is sourced from local suppliers where possible - the beef, lamb and pork come from a rare breed supplier in Yorkshire and the chicken is all free range. Each roast is served with both roast AND mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, spring greens, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. With optional extra sides such as cauliflower cheese, stuffing and pigs in blankets. Still hungry? Homemade puddings like sticky toffee, Belgian chocolate, lemon meringue pie and rice pudding are available.
Who: Three Little Words
Where: 12-13 Watson St, Manchester M3 4LP
Delivering?: No, book in advance and collect on Sunday from 12pm
Price: From £15pp
Three Little Words are more famous for their onsite Manchester Gin distillery so gin lovers will be glad to know that cocktails can be added to this Sunday roast box as well as bottles of wine. This one comes with all the usuals, part cooked slices of roast beef from Frost's Butchers, spuds ready to crisp in the oven, weekly changing seasonal veg and billowing Yorkies with the ubiquitous sticky toffee pudding for afters. This box had one of the best gravies we've tried too.
Who: Volta
Where: 167 Burton Rd, West Didsbury, Manchester M20 2LN
Delivering: Collection only
Price: From £15
Ask around about the best roast dinners in South Manchester and Volta comes up top of the list to a cult-like extent. Expect Himalayan salt aged beef, lemon and thyme roast chicken and a vegetarian Wellington all served with spuds, puds, greens, carrots, cauliflower cheese, pigs in blankets and red wine gravy - I need a lie down now! There's a small selection of wines and beers available too. Prices start at £15 for the veggie option. Drop them an email at voltaroasts@gmail.com to order.
