And it's not just a few token dishes either
It's a good time to be vegan in Manchester. The days when your options started and ended at Eighth Day are long gone; the range of restaurants and cafes that offer a decent range of plant-based food is growing all the time.
Don Giovanni is the latest restaurant to introduce a vegan-friendly menu – and we want to give them credit for doing a proper job.
While lots of places stick a solitary vegan dish on their menu, not many offer a full range of plant-based starters, mains and desserts.
While lots of places stick a solitary vegan dish on their menu, not many offer a full range of plant-based starters, mains and desserts. They've put a lot of thought into this and it shows.
There are many options to choose from but our personal favourite from the starters is the puttanesca panzerotti – little pastry triangles filled with a gorgeous mix of vegan parmesan, spinach, capers and olives.
From the mains, we love the herby vegan lasagne – and the vegan pizza with its topping of vegan mozzarella, artichokes, spinach, black olives, pine nuts, cherry tomatoes and rocket.
For dessert, you can choose from home-made delights such as a vegan panna cotta, and a fragole con balsamico e gelato limone (lemon sorbet with strawberry and balsamic sauce).
The elegant presentation makes this food feel extra special. If you think eating out as a vegan means settling for second best, head to Don Giovanni to see how far plant-based cooking has come.
