THE project may have been eighteen months in fermentation, but the interest in Ancoats’ new beery bolthole certainly hasn’t gone flat.
Seven Bro7hers has opened on what is perhaps the city’s hottest spot for indie food and drink entrepreneurs
Seven Bro7hers Beerhouse has just launched on Cutting Room Square, a project of love, blood and toil from the seven McAvoy siblings (yes there are actually seven brothers: Kit, Luke, Keith, Dan, er, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub) who gave up careers in teaching, design and engineering to honour their old man (a prolific home brewer) by setting up a craft brewery on a Trafford Park industrial estate.
Two and a half years and one wildly successful £200k crowdfunder later, and the McAvoy’s new, stripped back, 200-capacity, spit ‘n’ sawdust bar is ready to rock with two-floors, seven keg taps, two handpumps, multiple guest beers, a decent gin shelf, some nuts, six Chesterfield sofas, a stage and an entire wooden wall ‘knocked up for about £60… £1 per pallet’.
Sister (there’s four – poor mam) and events planner Lucy is to thank for the look of the place, which has opened in the Ice Plant building on what is perhaps the city’s hottest spot for indie food and drink entrepreneurs. Opposite the crazy successful Rudy’s Pizza, next door to Goose Fat and Wild Garlic (a restaurant/microbrewery set to launch in March, we’re told) and a bottle cap’s throw from Mexicana and Second City Bar, whispers suggest yet more newcomers for Northern Quarter’s once hushed neighbour.
But for the time being all eyes are on the bros and the promise of good times and fine beer.
What To Drink?
Session Craft (3.8%): Thirst quenching and easy drinking with abundant citrus aromas and tropical fruit flavours with a surprisingly bitter, piney aftertaste.
Water Melon Wheat (3.8%): Summery quaffing stuff that’s still tasting well mid-winter and yes, you do get a hit of watermelon on the palate after the obvious wheat beer aromas and, less obvious, pineapple notes. It tastes less sweet than expected.
IPA (4.8%): Aromas of grapefruit and green apple and sharp citrussy, tropical flavours. Oh, yes, and a refreshing grapefruit tang down the lacy glass.
Dark Stout Porter (5.2 per cent): A silky, smoky heavyweight that delivers oodles of roasted coffee, chocolate, perhaps prunes and liquorice, with an undertow of fruity hops, finishing quite bitter.
