IF you've been watching BBC2's Restaurant Wars and thinking, I fancy some of that, here's a tip for you.

We like Mr Cooper's because it offers Rogan's acclaimed cooking at accessible prices

Mr Cooper's Restaurant & Bar is Simon Rogan's second restaurant at The Midland Hotel. It's not on a Michelin-mission like The French, but it has just bagged two AA rosettes – the mark of good food made with technical excellence.

In the words of our editor Jonathan Schofield who reviewed Mr Cooper's when it opened last September, it offers extraordinary quality for relatively humble prices. Menus start from just £15 for a two course lunch.

At Mr Cooper's, Rogan has taken a departure from his hallmark British style to deliver a more international menu featuring dishes such as Halibut baked in cabbage leaf, broad beans and vin blanc, and Malabar pilaff, lamb rumps, garlic, lemon and chilli. His menus change with the seasons, making the most of the best produce available and taking care to maximise natural flavours.

The dining room reflects the garden of the name. Mr Cooper's is a calming, elegant setting with a wall of cascading plants, a central feature of a 12ft tree, and lots of natural daylight. The perfect backdrop to menus defined by just-picked ingredients.

The bar meanwhile is a destination in its own right. The cocktails are Rogan's handiwork as well, using his syrups and infusions to create unusual tastes. Like the restaurant, it has a lovely atmosphere to it; grown-up and without pretensions.

We like Mr Cooper's because it offers Rogan's acclaimed cooking at accessible prices and in the kind of environment where everyone can feel at home. If you'd like to try it, just drop in for drinks, or book a table for lunch or dinner.
