RUMOUR had it that Madonna, yes the Madonna, would be in attendance, along with David Gandy (and his beautiful, chiseled jawline), Michael Jackson, David Bowie, and Prince, who was to kick-off his much-anticipated 'Resurrection' tour...or so we heard.

They didn't show... but we did get Bez (well what's a Manc knees-up without the Happy Mondays maraca man?)

Principal pulled out all the stops for its launch party

Roaring up from London on a Virgin first class pendolino, The Sunday Times Style magazine threw a decadent and glamorous renaming party for the Principal Hotel (formerly The Palace) last night, following its extensive £25 million renovation.

And chatter of celebrities and famous faces was rife.

The velvet-roped party did indeed fulfil some high expectations, as the 1500-strong guestlist included superstar DJ Mark Ronson, who was spinning tunes throughout the evening.

Fashion favourite and Bury-raised designer Henry Holland was also in attendance, as well as New Order's Bernard Sumner, Saturdays star Vanessa White, actor Dougray Scott, model Jade Parfitt, DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, The Smith's Andy Rourke, Maxine Peake and local musician Bipolar Sunshine.

Did we mention Bez was there?

And not forgetting the army of drag queens, who have become a frequent attraction at the hotel’s newly opened public bar and restaurant, The Refuge by Volta – a 10,000 square foot spectacle boasting a 40ft granite bar and an interior glass Winter Garden.

Here's how it went...
