Lured by the thought of a spicy chicken lunch, Confidential settled in to one of Cabana's booths with napkins at the ready.
The balance of sticky sweetness and malagueta spice sums up the best of Brazilian barbecue
Cabana certainly know their birds. The Spicy Malagueta Chicken skewers are a best-seller and it's easy to see why. The thigh is moist, tender and smothered in a secret marinade that's got a real chilli tingle.
The huge skewers are brought to the table and dexterously distributed on to plates. Interspersed between generous chunks of meat are juicy red peppers, providing a sweet contrast. But it's the spicy chicken, glossy and sticky, that will get you wielding your knife and fork with such glee.
The malagueta chilli, which is a fiery Brazilian chilli similar to the Portuguese piri-piri, works perfectly in the grilled chicken marinade with just the right amount of heat to make the dish really come alive. The balance of sticky sweetness and malagueta spice sums up the best of Brazilian barbecue.
Spicy Malagueta Chicken wings.
Served with sweet potato fries and a choice of Rio black beans, Biro-Biro rice or homeslaw, the Spicy Malagueta Chicken is a real hero of a meal. It's certainly enough to satisfy but being a greedy lot, we also ordered chargrilled pittas with chimichurri dip, crunchy fried rice balls with melted parmesan and buckets of the Spicy Malagueta Chicken wings.
The pittas were a delight, puffed up and flufffy with a slight smoky taste and great chimichurri whilst the rice balls, dipped in the malagueta mayo, were a revelation. However, it was the wings that had us going for it, waving for extra wipes, wrist deep in sticky sauce but with very big smiles on our faces.
