The Great British Pizza Company is setting up shop on Lapwing Lane
Almost every working day, since the beginning of the year, we've been kicking ourselves for not including pizza in our list of 2017 food trends. It just seemed too, well, obvious. But ever since new pizza places have been springing up like funghi across the city centre and suburbs, with yet more on the horizon.
The latest - due to open on Didsbury's Lapwing Lane next month - looks like a goodie though.
The Great British Pizza Company might sound like an oxymoron, but has received an impressive amount of positive national press coverage since it launched, five years ago, out the back of a converted 1974 VW Campervan in Margate.
A bricks and mortar restaurant on Margate’s picturesque seafront soon followed, as did an entry in the Waitrose Good Food Guide and a place in The Sunday Times top 25 UK pizzerias. Zoe Williams of The Sunday Telegraph even went as far to say "these were the best pizzas I've ever tasted. I ate two of them, for goodness' sake."
Their female founders know about food; Rachel Seed is a an award-winning chef (Best Gastropub in the South West, UK Food Pub of the Year) and a former food writer, and Lisa Richards is a journalist who has travelled the world reviewing hotels and restaurants.
They have created their own special recipe dough, out of which they form their signature thin and crispy bases. They cover this with slow-cooked tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and an array of local cheeses and British cured meats supplied by small and interesting independent producers. Pizzas include combinations such as Chandler & Dunn ham with Portabello mushroom, pear and British blue cheese, or Bath Pig British chorizo and chilli.
They said: “We are very excited to announce the opening of our first restaurant in Manchester. Work has already begun on the perfect site on Lapwing Lane, just along from one of our favourite spots, Wine & Wallop.”
GB•PIZZA•CO Didsbury is due to open in November 2017.
