THE North’s annual hospitality power list was announced today at a ceremony at the Northern Restaurant and Bar Show 2016 in Manchester Central.

Alongside long-established NRB Top 50 fellows such as Living Ventures’ Tim Bacon, San Carlo’s Carlo and Marcello Distefano, and JW Lees chief William Lees Jones, there were nine new entries for 2016 including: Sticky Walnut and Burnt Truffle chef patron Gary Usher; Lunya owners Peter and Elaine Kinsella; and Solita co-owner Franco Sotgiu.
Three special achievement awards were presented to Michael O’Hare of The Man Behind The Curtain, Mohammed Aslam MBE of Aagrah Restaurants, and the Mission Mars team made up of Roy Ellis, Neil Macleod, Joel Wilkinson, Adelaide Winter and Dan Mullen.
Despite only launching in the summer of 2014, O’Hare scooped his first Michelin star barely a year later for his radical debut restaurant, Man Behind The Curtain, in Leeds. More recently O'Hare was announced as the new creative director of GG Hospitality - the hotel and restaurant arm of Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville’s expanding empire.
Managing Director of the four-decade-old Aagrah restaurant empire, Mohammed Aslam MBE, was picked ‘not only for building a group of fourteen restaurants across the region but also for his commitment to the cities in which his restaurants are based’.
The team behind the newly formed Mission Mars, a hospitality supergroup comprised of Trof Group owners Joel Wilkinson, Adelaide Winter and Dan Mullen - alongside Revolution bar founders Roy Ellis and Neil Macleod - were also honoured following the unprecedented success of Albert's Schloss, which has smashed regional records for footfall and financial performance.
Thom Hetherington, CEO of organisers Holden Media, says “We received a record number of entrants to the NRB Top Fifty this year, making the judging an arduous but ultimately very rewarding process. There has been an influx of national brands to the North in the last year but if anything that seems to be have spurred the region’s operators onto ever higher levels.
“Restaurants and bars created right here in the North are redefining what can be achieved in the local food and drink scene, both creatively and commercially: it is quite simply the best time ever to be a Northern foodie."
The NRB awards panel comprises a number of experts in the fields of hospitality finance, property, law and consultancy.
