Selfless will occupy the basement of the abandoned Habib House on Stevenson Square

The council has just approved plans for a new basement bar on Stevenson Square in Northern Quarter.

Mark Andrew Developments (aka MAD Ltd) – the company behind a swathe of Manchester venues including Walrus, Hula and Rosylee – first announced plans to convert the abandoned Habib House on Stevenson Square in March 2015.

However, relocating headquarters to the site (renamed ‘Mad House’) and establishing a new print company on the ground floor meant plans for the basement venue – called Selfless - were not officially submitted until May last year.

Over a year on and the council have finally given the go-ahead, though with a number of conditions attached, including assurance that work will begin within three years.

MAD’s latest venue will take the number of drinking establishments on Stevenson Square to a hefty sixteen - 75% of which have opened in the past four years.

Meanwhile, work to finish Manchester's first dedicated sherry bar, Flok, directly opposite, is due to finish this weekend.

You know what they say, stand still in Northern Quarter for long enough and someone will open a bar in your naval.
