For almost 40 years the Chinatown archway has been a symbol of pride for our Chinese community
Almost 40 years ago, the iconic Chinatown archway was gifted to the people of Manchester from Beijing; a one-of-a-kind landmark assembled by Chinese artisans between 1986-87 as a symbol of pride and belonging for our city’s Chinese community.
Last Saturday (12 September), works began on the two-year project to repair and restore the archway.
The imperial arch is a heritage asset, and a Grade II listed structure. To carry out repairs materials and artisans from China will be sourced so that every facet of its restoration remains true to the culture which it honours.
The restoration of the iconic archway is part of a wider regeneration of the Chinatown area as Manchester City Council works to invest more into the amenity and upkeep of this important neighbourhood. Improvements have already been carried out earlier this year to make repairs to the large pagoda, new bespoke benches have been installed, and works are planned within the month to make repairs to the smaller pagoda.
Councillor Mandie Shilton Godwin, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: “For generations this arch has been a focal point for the Chinese community in Manchester. Ensuring that it remains standing proudly for years to come is a priority for us as a Council which is why we’re now embarking on this project of repair and restoration.
“We know the significance this area holds for many of our residents and that’s why we are committing to further investment, ensuring that it’s not only a top destination for tourists visiting Manchester, but a community that local people feel proud to live and work in.
“During this two-year project we know that the arch will be missed, but rest assured it will be worth the wait."
