No.1 Watson Street's beer and food pairing night returns this Thursday

NO.1 Watson Street's popular beer and food pairing nights return on 19 January with an event that shows they're as serious about cooking as they are about brewing.

There's always a great atmosphere at these nights, and you don't need to be a craft beer geek to enjoy them.

The beers this time are from Wild Beer Co in Somerset. Their brewers will be travelling up here with plenty of stories about wild yeast strains and the imaginative flavours they create.

The menu, meanwhile, is the work of the No.1 Watson Street chefs. While some food pairing nights go for canape-sized portions that wouldn't fill a vole, this one opts for a full-meal approach that should protect you against a hangover on Friday morning.

You'll start with a Manchester Egg served with Somerset Wild (ABV 5%) - a sour beer with hints of home-made lemonade.

It's followed by honey-roasted chipolatas and honey-mustard mayo with Ninkasi (ABV 9%) – a celebration beer with a champagne fermentation.

Next you'll be served cockles in white wine cream sauce bedded into a leek and parsley mash, accompanied by Breakfast of Champignons (ABV 4.1%) with its notes of mushrooms and black pepper.

Dessert is burnt orange purée and a warm Jaffa Cake mousse with Millionaire (ABV 4.7%) – a  chocolate and salted caramel milk stout.

You'll be guided through each course and pairing, with plenty of time between them to savour the distinctive flavours. There's always a great atmosphere at these nights, and you don't need to be a craft beer geek to enjoy them. (Though there's a good chance you'll become one before the night is over.)
