After a stunning transformation, Manchester’s Caffé Grande Piccolino now serves its famous Italian dishes all day. As well as a brand new breakfast and brunch menu, there’s now an extensive deli bar, wine boutique, gelato bar and covered outdoor terrace to explore.
Herb-topped tomatoes and field mushrooms, sausages, homemade Tuscan bread and poached eggs complete the picture. Mornings have never tasted so good.
Luxurious booths and designer lighting set the scene for brunch cocktails like the new blood orange bellini. Home-made breads, and delicate, red Mediterranean prawns are the perfect appetisers, followed by sharing boards of sweet bresaola beef and percorino cheese with truffled honey. Freshly baked sourdough pizza and prime cuts of Aberdeen Angus beef are more highlights of Caffé Grande Piccolino’s menu - and we’ve not even got to the hand crafted patisserie and gelato yet.
With so much to choose from, we’ve gone ahead and tried some of the new dishes and drinks on the menu. With breakfast and brunch a focal point, that’s where we’ve started before taking in highlights of the lunch and dinner menu. Time to tuck in….
BREAKFAST DISHES
The ‘Full Piccolino’ breakfast
Provenance is a big deal at Caffé Grande Piccolino, which is part of the Indivdual Restaurants group (which includes RBG and Piccolino Alderley Edge), such that the menu opens with a list of suppliers, detailing everything from where they source their baby spinach to the sweet and smoky Italian pancetta that’s served as part of the ‘Full Piccolino’, pictured. Herb-topped tomatoes and field mushrooms, sausages, homemade Tuscan bread and poached eggs complete the picture. Mornings have never tasted (and looked) so good.
Eggs Reali
Eggs are a highlight of the new Caffé Grande Piccolino’s new brunch and breakfast menu. There’s a breakfast frittata, Eggs Fiorentine (spinach and Hollandaise), eggs Strapazzate (scrambled with fresh, fried mushrooms and grilled Tuscan bread) among others. Eggs Reali, is a favourite (pictured): fresh H Forman and Sons smoked salmon is served on a handmade muffin, with two poached eggs and the smoothest Hollandaise this side of Paris.
The Sunset
The team who make Caffé Grande Piccolino’s juices and smoothies use ‘cold pressing’ techniques to keep as many nutrients in your drink as possible. The Sunset is a winning mix of banana, blueberries, acai, pomegranate and coconut water. It’s right on trend. More options can be found on the juicery menu here.
Berry waffles
Everyone knows that waffles, pancakes, crepes and muffins turn breakfast into a special occasion. And these freshly cooked waffles are a real treat for the tastebuds. Perfect for sharing, they are served warm and dusted with icing sugar and mountains of fresh berries, with a little jug of maple syrup on the side.
LUNCH AND DINNER DISHES
Antipasti
The official name of this dish is ‘Antipasti di Terra e Montagna’ but we prefer to call it ‘simply the best’. Fennel salami, coppa di Parma, Parma ham, bresaola, buffalo mozzarella, Sardinian pecorino, buffalo ricotta and Gorgonzola cheese are paired with the kind of delightful flourishes only Italians could think up; candied peel, chilli flakes, fresh mint, truffled honey and pickled capers. The dish is topped with traditional crisp breads and looks awesome. Why not design your own sharing board from the new deli bar - or ask a member of the team to put together a selection of Italy’s finest antipasti to take home?
Red Mediterranean prawns
Alongside cured meats and cheeses, seafood is a draw across the Individual Restaurants group – and Piccolino’s range has massively expanded with the new deli bar. For something different, these simple, red, Mediterranean prawns served with a dipping bowl for your fingers, and a fresh wedge of fresh lemon wrapped in linen, are a must.
Olives
Yes, these are olives - but not just any olives. Like the rest of the food and drink on offer at Caffé Grande Piccolino, attention to detail is spot on. These are marinated giant Apulian Cerignola olives, and each one is a buttery, lemony mouthful of summer.
DESSERT DISHES
Tiramisu
Caffé Grande Piccolino’s pastry chefs creates daily, changing delicacies. This is the house ‘tiramisu’; a well propertied creation that takes in layers of freshly whipped cream, boozy sponge and a delicate shell of finest 70 per cent dark chocolate and dusted with aromatic cocoa. Romance on a plate, in our opinion.
Gelato
The new gelato bar, overflowing with Italian favourites like white chocolate, pistachio and passion fruit flavours, has arrived just in time for summer. This is a typical ‘copa’ and every portion includes three flavours which change according to the seasons.
With food, drink and good times guaranteed - not to mention the all-new interior and terrace - we think you’re going to love the new Caffé Grande Piccolino.
