The essential weekend treat you didn’t know you needed
Sunday roasts are taken up a gear at Rosso with their new three-course menu mixing British tradition with Italian flair. It is excellent value at just £25pp.
We’ve always been perfectly happy with good old roast pork and apple sauce. Oh, and Yorkshire pudding – if you save it for roast beef then you are missing out. But now we’ve tried Rosso’s porchetta - all crisp crackling on the outside and rolled with mustard, fennel seed and wild garlic on the inside - we can never go back. And it comes with a Yorkshire pudding and smoked apple relish so why would you ever go anywhere else?
The Italian take on Sunday lunch is a stroke of genius. The roast rump of lamb marinated in the Mediterranean flavours of oregano, lemon and chilli is every bit as good as the porchetta and it comes with the British trimmings we’ve come to expect. Translation – Yorkshire puddings again.
It’s not just roast dinners though – you can find Tuscan seafood and fish stew too and vegetarians can enjoy a rich lentil and bean roast.
There are three courses and starters and dessert take their cue more from elegant Italian cooking. To begin choose from dishes like mussels in a ‘nduja and roast tomato sauce or burrata and culatello ham – the best of the best Parma ham.
The dessert is cherry and almond crostata with whipped vanilla cream. It’s a light yet luxurious end to a meal and an Italian classic. Roast beef is a classic for a reason, now discover why porchetta is such a prized pinnacle of Sunday dinner.
