Square One will transform a former car park into the city's 'hottest new open-air clubbing destination'
When it comes to transforming underused assets into cultural capital, Manchester has form. From Escape to Freight Island (a former freight depot) and Victoria Warehouse (storage warehouse) to Islington Mill (cotton mill) and Hatch (shipping containers), a creative way with a bit of industrial heritage is absolutely de rigueur.
Add to the list Square One, a former car park off the Mancunian Way which will be metamorphosed later this year into Manchester’s 'hottest new outdoor clubbing destination.'
The events space will be hosting weekly events from 26 June throughout the summer; kicking off with a launch party featuring Denis Sulta, Enzo Siragusa and Hot Since 82. Future shows are set to include the likes of La Discotheque, Zutekh, Jika Jika, Animal Crossing and Amsterdam based label PIV debuting their first-ever showcase in Manchester.
The organisers say: "Manchester is our home. This one is for the dancers, a new venue with no nonsense. Let's make up for the lost memories and come together, a good and proper open-air affair. Summer is coming and the dance floor is ready."
The past year has been incredibly difficult for hospitality of all types and clubbing is perhaps the most overlooked. Reopening night-time hospitality has been pushed to the end of the roadmap so this vote of confidence in Manchester's clubbing scene has to be a positive thing.
Square One are hosting a series of socially distanced parties in the heart of Manchester city centre that allow us to dance together again, every Saturday from 26 June 2-11pm. Tickets are available from the website.
