There are three key signifiers that winter is about to take a hold of Spinningfields.

Now it’s back with mulled wine a plenty over the festive period, a hog-roast and a new Rekorderlig Cider so hot that the Government are reportedly considering using it to replace winter fuel payments for the elderly.

Firstly, the smash bang clatter of bare-arsed shouty builders installing the ice-rink outside Confidential towers and resigning the once green, green grass of Spinningfields to an icy, dark and lonely end.

Secondly, winds so gusty and vigorous tearing through the glass splattered arteries of the district that last year one of Pret A Manger’s umbrellas had to be recovered from Esbjerg on the westerly coast of Denmark.

Lastly, the erection and opening of the two peaked Curious TeePee outside Oast House.

In which case, you can consider winter firmly here.

You see, the problem is with the Oast House is that they’re just too bloody popular for their own good. During the summer months, the popularity of the pub is alleviated by the extent of their outdoor courtyard. It’s a whopper.

But in winter this just won’t do. Too nippy. Too exposed.

So in 2012 those clever buggers and Spinningfields zealots Living Ventures came up with an alternative over-spill for the pub proper. A warmer, much cosier one. So came the Oast House’s Curious Teepee with fire, wood, fairy lights, rugs, fleeces, its own bar (with four different kinds of the same Stella on draught – they’ve missed an ale trick here), a dance floor and a disco ball. Particularly popular with the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains those last two.
