The Scandinavian-inspired venue has closed just seven months into business
Northern Quarter bar and restaurant FIKA has closed down.
The Scandinavian-inspired venue, which opened just seven months ago, took over the spot formerly occupied by Bakerie on Lever Street, after it closed in March 2018.
Opened by Mark Whyte - the man behind nearby NQ venues Guilty by Association and Lost in Tokyo - FIKA took its name from the Swedish custom of a coffee and cake break and aimed to provide an 'inviting place for all' to share in 'coffee, specially selected beer, nibbles, wine and conversation'.
Reviewing FIKA in November, Confidential's Lucy Tomlinson appreciated the 'Instagram-friendly interiors', but felt that the menu 'didn’t exactly scream Nordic', with dishes including Moroccan-spiced chicken flatbread, chicken supreme and pizza.
The origins of the term Fika are unknown, but one theory suggests that it's a muddle of the word 'Kaffi' - a Swedish slang word for coffee. We're not sure about that, but it seems FIKA's own muddle might have been their undoing.
