Harley’s thoughts:
Gritty, gripping, and with a final twist that you could’ve never seen coming, this film has all the right components of a compelling indie thriller. Complete with stunning yet organic-feeling cinematography (helped along by the breathtaking filming locations of northern Norway), this eerie drama - based on a true story by American author David Vann - looks at the complexities of separated family dynamics and how letting go doesn’t always mean moving on.
Absent father Tom (Swann Arlaud) attempts to rekindle his relationship with teenage son Roy (Woody Norman) by embarking on a year-long bonding trip at a remote cabin in Norway, going back to basics and embracing every element thrown at them - both with the passing of the seasons and through navigating their uncertain futures together.
If you’re into dramatic flicks that keep you guessing right up until the credits roll, My Father’s Island will be right up your street.
Score: 4/5
