YES, of course, this was an April Fools day yarn.
THE LINK building between Central Library and Manchester Town Hall Extension has been called 'ridiculous', 'pointless', 'a waste of money', 'ugly' and even 'Sir Richard Leese's folly' after the Council Leader who presided over its erection.
Let this be an example to Manchester that we always know best, said a spokesperson
But last night at the prestigious Goldfish Bowl Awards at London's trendy and glitzy Carbuncle Centre on the South Bank, Manchester picked up the prize for pioneering architectural work in Library Walk with the production 'of a contained glass vessel that has no clear practical use'.
Council chiefs where present to pick up the award and were said to be thrilled that "despite nobody agreeing with the need for the structure to be built, we built it."
"Let this be an example to Manchester that we always know best," said a spokesperson.
The council received a winner's cheque of £3.50 to offset against the £3.5m cost of the link building.
Judges were said to be astonished at the lavishness of Manchester City Council during a time of severe local authority cutbacks. They applauded the city council's commitment to delivering 'a really significant bowl that is right up there with other important large bowls such as the Millennium Dome and Phil Mitchell's head'.
The judges went on to say: "Despite cutbacks across the city the way the council have pressed ahead with this project is impressive. It would seem they really are living in a goldfish bowl."
Library Walk is 77-years-old, very attractive, but sadly dead. The cause of death is unclear but is believed to be Bloody Mindedness.
