They serve food till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays
NOBODY plans to be in a backstreet kebab shop at 2am on Sunday morning. Just like nobody plans to inhale a burger and fries on the last train home. But we all know deep down that it's going to happen if there's beer involved. If only there was somewhere to eat late night that wouldn't fill you with bitter remorse the next day...
Oh hang on, there is. If you're anywhere near the Northern Quarter, head to Chakalaka on Oldham Street where they serve their full food menu until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Their food is South African, though at that time of night, all you need to know is that it's really, really good.
Drunken munchies you'd happily eat sober
Fresh, home-made and cooked from quality ingredients, the Chakalaka menu is about as far from junk food as you can get at that time of day. But the price and sheer tastiness make it perfect for curing your booze-inspired cravings.
Chakalaka's food is South African, though at that time of night, all you need to know is that it's really, really good. Just-cooked snacks include their jaffle toasties (£3), their cheesy maize balls (£5), and their homemade samoosas with mango dip (£5).
Or if you've got a proper hunger on, go for something more substantial like their bunny chow (£10). It's essentially a curry sandwich – choose from chicken or vegan. Or how about a traditional South African hot dog in a brioche bun with fries or a potato spiral (£10)?
They also serve some very tempting sweet treats and puddings, but you don't need to hear about those until you've regained your full powers of judgement. (Did someone say warm, dippable doughnuts?) Resist.
Post-gig or post-bar, head here
You can eat-in if you like, making it a very civilised way end to your evening, even if you did spend the last few hours dancing on tables and downing Jägerbombs.
So next time you're touring the bars of Stevenson Square, or bouncing along to a live set at Band on the Wall, why not stop off at Chakalaka before you head home?
The guys there are friendly, welcoming and ready to set you right with some soak-it-up South African food.
Chakalaka is just opposite The Castle on Oldham Street and is open till 2am, Friday and Saturday.
