WHILE most of us will wake up to a clammy Cadbury's choccie awkwardly thumbed through the back of a crooked cardboard advent calendar, those who stroll past Northern Quarter's Dale Street each crisp December morning will wake to an entirely different, and typically 'Northern Quarter', proposition.
The artworks will be sold on in order to raise money for Manchester children's charity Wood Street Mission
Yes Manchester's bohemian borough is now the proud keeper of one giant advent calendar, courtesy of Northern Quarter creative agency True North and interior designers Sheila Bird.
Titled 24 Days On Lever Street, the giant advent calendar - pasted onto 24 windows of a building facing Bunsen Street - will see large art works revealed each day in the run up to Christmas.
Day 1 saw the unveiliing of an artwork, titled A Partridge In A Pear Tree, by Grammy Award-nominated Manchester-based illustrator Stanley Chow.
Other contributors include a number of local artists such as Deanna Halsall and Young, Northern Quarter bars PLY and Guilty by Association, Rain City Tattoo Collective and SpaceportX.
Each of the artworks will be made available to buy in print for £10, with all profits donated to Manchester children's charity Wood Street Mission - which last Christmas gave new toys and food to over 2000 families and 4500 children.
Ady Bibby, True North's Creative Director, said: “We wanted to find a way to demonstrate the Northern Quarter’s creative talent whilst bringing a little festive cheer to the people who live and work here. I’m a big kid when it comes to Christmas and it doesn’t get bigger than this.”
Wood Street Mission's Chief Executive, Roseanna Sweeney, said: “Christmas is a difficult time of year for struggling families and we will be giving out toys and food to about 2,000 families and 4,500 children in the coming weeks. Funds raised from this engaging and highly creative initiative will help us get all local kid’s Christmas off to a great start.”
Buy a print for £10 here and help raise money for Wood Street Mission this Christmas.
