THERE was a time when Happy Hour lasted for an hour. And while many stretch over two or three nowadays, nowhere has one quite like the Blue Pig's on a Friday. It starts at midday and keeps on rolling until they close in the early hours of the morning.
This is one of their ice-rinsed drinks – cocktails with ice rinsed in Vermouth or Absinthe for a subtly enhanced flavour.
So that's £5 cocktails all night, then. Dangerous. But also tempting. Especially when you see the new menu.
It's got a selection of highlights from their full-length cocktail list, which has just been revamped for winter with a host of weird and wonderful creations. The Happy Hour menu is available Monday-Thursday from 5pm-7pm, and all day and night on Fridays.
We like the sound of its '1461' for warming us up after a trek across town – it's Woodford Reserve bourbon slowly infused with orange oil and Peychaud bitters. This is one of their ice-rinsed drinks – cocktails with ice rinsed in Vermouth or Absinthe for a subtly enhanced flavour.
There's also a section featuring beer cocktails. During Happy Hour you can sip the Beers Knees for £5. Made with Botanist Gin, lemon and honey, and topped with lemongrass and ginger beer, you could almost convince yourself you're drinking it for the good of your health.
Then there's the Boston Shaken section - the Apple and Elderflower is calling to us here. It's Absolut Vodka, sauvignon blanc, apple juice and elderflower liqueur.
DJs at The Blue Pig
So that's the drinks sorted. What about the dancing? On Friday nights from 9pm they've got Friday resident DJ Jonna; a global producer and City Fly Records label owner and a regular at international festivals with gigs lined up in USA, Russia, Berlin, Mexico and Dimensions Festival with his eclectic mix of house, disco, techno, hip hop, funk, jazz and anything with soul. Entry is free.
Head there on a Saturday and you miss Happy Hour but you do get the PB&J DJ collective with the best hiphop, funk, soul and R&B. Free entry again.
The Blue Pig is a Northern Quarter favourite for many reasons, its on-the-ball bar team and its graffiti covered ceilings, huge mirrors, original cast iron chandeliers and enormous Victorian windows perfect for watching the world go by, and its tendency to turn a few afterwork drinks into a night-long cocktail session.
Next time you're heading out in the NQ make sure it's on your itinerary. Get there early and don't blame us if you end up staying all night.
