FIRST it was Cities of Hope transforming bland building sides into vivid outdoor canvases: now the Crazy Pedro’s lot have gotten in on the Northern Quarter spruce-up, commissioning four mosaics to festoon the frontage of their recently-opened second branch.
Like all its pizza-decessors, it shouldn’t work...but, somehow, it does
Meander down Short Street - what was once, according to Crazy Pedro’s director Ross Mackenzie, a “very grotty dark alley” (he's right) - and you’ll find four very distinctive, five-foot high mosaics staring down at you.
Inspired by the pizza parlour’s Mexican wrestling mask-wearing mascot, the prismatic panels were designed by mosaic artists Mary Goodwin and Mark Kennedy; who says ‘they complete the restaurant's plans to transform Short Street from the problem 'neck end' of the area into an 'outdoor art gallery'.
The four panels are the biggest pieces Goodwin has worked on. She joined Kennedy after Crazy Pedro’s approached him, while he was still working on three huge commissions - Eric Morecambe, Laurence Oliver and Thora Hird - helping to complete the latter, which is made from broken crockery.
Originally drawn by Manchester artist Daren Newman, the Crazy Pedro’s NQ mosaics are made from Johnsons prismatic tiles and Laticrete USA cement; mounted on a revolutionary new lightweight backing called Deltaboard, making them easier to manoeuvre into place.
Kennedy also designed the Affleck’s famous building mosaics, whose basement Crazy Pedro’s now inhabits.
While we’re on the subject of the ‘part time pizza parlour’, it’d be a travesty not to mention their latest wacky concoction, which follows such culinary delights as the ‘Back to School’ (turkey dinosaurs, potato smiles and spaghetti hoops), ‘Dreggs’ (sausage rolls, baked beans, brown sauce) and ‘Curry Mile’ (chicken tikka, onion bhajis, poppadoms, mint yoghurt).
The latest Christmas special might just be one of the most outrageous yet - perhaps, dare we say it, even rivalling the ‘Dirty Northerner’. Comprising cheddar cheese, fig, pear, pigs in blankets, parsley, cranberry, balsamic glaze and Christmas cake (yes, that rich, sweet boozy pud that totally shouldn’t go), ‘Let It Dough, Let It Dough, Let It Dough’ is an absolute fruitcake of a pizza.
And, like all its pizza-decessors, it shouldn’t work...but, somehow, it might. Only at Crazy Pedro’s eh.
