Dog Bowl on Whitworth St has launched a new USA-inspired “Breakfast Bowl” menu
The popular bowling alley within a city centre archway might not be the first place you think of for weekend breakfasts, but thanks to their brand new menu, you can now indulge in an American-inspired breakfast before playing a round or two of mid-morning bowling.
Created to satisfy demand from early-rising bowling fans, the new “Breakfast Bowl” is available between 10am-12pm every Saturday and Sunday, making Dog Bowl the only bowling venue in Manchester to serve a hearty breakfast before the games begin.
Taking inspiration from across the pond, the new mid-morning menu boasts a variety of sweet and savoury dishes – though to be fair, some are both, as many of the savoury breakfasts come with a tiny jug of energy- giving maple syrup.
If your week was heavy and your Friday night even heavier, you’re going to need their signature breakfast; The Full American (£9) which includes smoked streaky bacon, two fried eggs, sausage, BBQ beans, tater tots (grated potato dumplings),a proper grilled tomato and of course, waffles served with maple syrup.
The more hung-over one of us tucked in to that, whilst the other decided to check out one of the lighter options; ham and eggs (£7). This high protein breakfast was served as straight as a perfect shot along with a simple slice of fluffy white toast, just in case carbs are needed after all.
We’d brought the whole family along and the kids couldn’t believe those clever Yanks had invented such a wonderous thing as the sausage patty – a burger made out of sausage meat, served as part of ‘sausage and waffle’ (£7). They nearly spontaneously combusted when they realised they were allowed to douse the whole lot in maple syrup.
We were spoilt for choice amongst excellent fuel-your-day choices ranging from French toast with whipped cream and strawberries (£7) to classics such as salmon Benedict (£7) and the sesame seed coated breakfast bun (£8) stuffed full of bacon, sausage, fried egg, tater tots and Jack cheese.
Breakfast fans with a sugar craving are going to want to sink their sweet tooth into a cinnamon roll (£5) with sticky icing and juicy raisins, or the homemade American pancakes (£6), stacked high with fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and served with pouring cream and (of course) maple syrup.
In the end, we chose the classic American sweet and savoury brunch combo chicken and bacon waffles (£7) with its satisfyingly crunchy herb coating, salty bacon and drizzle of sweet syrup.
Dog Bowl Manager Joe told us he’d received loads of requests from our customers for breakfast on weekends, “and as we always do with our clients, we listened,” he said. “Weekends are extremely popular with both families and avid bowling fans, and the introduction of the breakfast menu means these customers can start their day with a treat. Hopefully, they will enjoy their bowling even more now with a full belly.”
Dog Bowl’s American inspired breakfast menu and bowling is definitely a rival to a good old English fry-up and a lie on the sofa. As to be expected with any Yankee inspired offering, portions are huge - but at least calories can be worked off on the bowling alley
Weekend bowling is £8 on a Saturday and £6 on a Sunday with children under 12 only £4.
