THE biggest European Science conference and festival is taking place in just under a hundred days in Manchester as, trumpets please, we become The European City of Science. You can read our take on this massive event here.
Tweet your favourite science fact by using the hashtag #ESOF100days
To mark the landmark date, those brainy buggers at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), the central feature of this scientific celebration, are giving away 100 day tickets to their opening ceremony. ESOF will bring 4,500 leading researchers, thinkers, innovators, policy makers, journalists and educators to Manchester from over 90 countries.
To join in people need to follow @ESOF2016 and tweet their favourite science fact using the hashtag #ESOF100days. The free tickets are for early career researchers and students to encourage their participation.
There's more gift-giving as well. Hacks can join in. There's a ESOF 2016 Travel Grant Scheme for Journalists as an extension of a scheme offered by Nature Publishing Group (NPG). Apply here if you're wishing to report on ESOF.
Meanwhile Mancunians can return the favour by gifting their time to the European City of Science celebrations. The event needs volunteers and for Britain, remember, the use of huge numbers of volunteers for major events began with the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
This is what ESOF says:
'Between 24–27 July, thousands of people will come to Manchester to see some of the most eminent minds in science, technology, engineering, maths, the social sciences and humanities talk on the latest research and developments in the scientific world.
'Wrapped around the conference itself is a special science festival – Science and the City – taking place from 22nd – 29th July. Our dynamic and diverse programme of events is yet to be announced but will connect science with the arts, culture and sport, bringing the city alive with science.
'We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to be part of the ESOF experience and would welcome expressions of interest from people of any age, background or ability.'
If you're interested then apply here, but be aware the deadline is Sunday 15 May.
