CHEF Mary Ellen McTague of Aumbry read A Legacy by German-born author Sybille Bedford and was shaken and stirred.
So she got together with writer Sherry Ashworth for Prestwich Book Festival.
The food matched the readings. Pine and musk scents for example were placed on the table to add to the atmosphere.
The result was an event at Aumbry presented by Sherry Ashworth with three extracts read by Coronation Street actor Julie Hesmondhalgh (‘Hayley Cropper’).
The reader and the writer
McTague dreamt up food inspired by the food imagery in the book.
The extracts were read beautifully by Julie, who admitted to staying up half the night to work on her pronunciation.
I still can't get my head around that paragraph of big French words she nailed, and suggested that all French people from now on should speak their language with a touch of Lancashire in their accents.

The food courses matched scenes in The Legacy.
Pastoral life at Feldon: Home Smoked Boar, plums with Sweet Cloudy Wine
50th Birthday Party: Crayfish, asparagus & soft boiled gull's egg
South of France: Wild Seabass baked in salt crust, fennel, rosemary bread, butter & olive oil
Sacher Torte. Turkish Delight.
It was a lovely evening that also raised money for Manchester's Children's Hospital. Food and literature are a beautiful blend.
