RECREATING Alice’s topsy turvy wonderland is no easy feat: in most places you’ll find a watered down version, with but a hint of the story’s original magic. Not so with Richmond Tea Rooms, whose extravagant decor and indulgent afternoon teas whisk diners down the rabbit hole as soon as they enter.
Richmond afternoon tea is as much about ceremony as it is great taste
But, with every dish screaming ‘Eat Me’ and every potion shouting ‘Drink Me’, how to choose from the menu? Well, with Confidential’s guide to great ordering, of course. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, an unbirthday or simply want to enjoy fantastic food in fantastical surroundings, Richmond Tea Rooms is a very important date indeed.
Drinks
Special Blend and Loose Leaf Teas
After all, what would a tearoom be without some pretty special brews? From Red Berry & Rose Petal to Vanilla Chai and Gunpowder, there’s a flavour for everyone; including the traditional Tea Room Blend if you’re feeling less adventurous. Don’t know your Cinnamon from your Chamomile? The knowledgeable staff are all too happy to help.
Breakfast
Eggs Benedict
Two English muffins topped with runny, poached eggs - dark yolks and all - along with thick-cut ham and a delicate Hollandaise sauce...our mouths are watering just recalling it.
Light Meals
Tweedle Dum is like a Croque-Monsieur, this French favourite boasts premium ham, melted cheese, Béchamel sauce and soft toasted butter bread - but has an added fried egg component. Genius. It is also served with salad and a pot of homemade chutney.
Salads
Bury Black Pudding Bon Bon’s and Tea Poached Pear Salad
Combining all the pleasure of this local meaty delicacy with a guilt-free salad, this dish is perfect for waistline watchers who don’t want to compromise on enjoyment. With two thick slides of black pudding and a drizzle of honey mustard dressing, you can’t go wrong.
Afternoon Tea
Queen’s
Served on a three-tiered strand that graduates from sweet to savoury, Richmond afternoon tea is as much about ceremony as it is great taste. Indulge in this most English of pastimes, with a medley of treats spanning cherry bakewells to cheesecakes and cheese & onion quiches. Cakes change daily but expect the likes of fluffy mousses, crisp macarons and scones with clotted cream and jam - amongst the best Confidential had ever tasted - alongside savoury delights such as fresh bruschetta and mini sandwiches. There’s enough for two people here so it’s great for sharing, too. Fancy a glass of bubbles? Go for Richmond Tea, which is Queen’s with an added glass of prosecco.
Gentleman’s
For those with less of sweet tooth, Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea should hit the spot: homemade sausage roll and Cumberland scotch egg, beer-battered fish fingers, chunky chips, mushy pies, sandwich selection, pot of loose leaf tea and an Eccles cake to round things off. Oh, and a pint of beer. Cheers.
