Friedrich Engels in Manchester
Young FE, as he arrived in McrEngels, with Karl Marx, was the father of communism. The 22 years he spent in Manchester shaped his thoughts and ideas. As the well-known historian Asa Briggs said, ‘If Engels had lived not in Manchester...his conception of class and his theories of the role of class might have been very different. In this case Marx might have been not a communist but a currency reformer. The fact that Manchester was taken to be the symbol of the age in the 1840s was of central importance in modern world history.’ The entertaining tour follows Engels’ footsteps around the city and underlines Manchester’s key role within the world we live.
Since this is Engels' 193rd birthday we finish in a pub for a drink to celebrate this feisty and very interesting man.

Tour of Uninteresting Objects
Weird under the archAh yes, the un-regarded things that make a city. This tour reveals odd sculptures, mad details, washed up remnants of things inside and outside buildings. It’s different – guaranteed. Each tour will tackle a different area of the city centre and environs and uncover massive quantities of uninteresting objects. It will we promise be massively uninteresting. It will be so tremendously uninteresting it will be utterly fascinating. The route is a new one so if you’ve been on the uninteresting tour before you’ll be surprised again
The last of the 'Uninteresting' series tours in 2013 is on Saturday 16 November and covers Albert Square, Convention Area, Canals, 3.30pm. Meet outside Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, City centre, M2 3JL, 10 minutes before your tour time. £8 per person.

The Haunted Underworld Tours
In a dark and mysterious undercroft of the city centre old stories are coming alive. Tales might include those of dead artists, sinister magicians, tragic lovers and body-snatchers. Expect the unexpected and also lots of laughs. People who are brave enough to come on the tour should try not to faint (something that happened last time).
Hi Jonathan, I wanted to drop you a line following our Haunted Tour on Friday. Very simply put, absolutely brilliant!! Thank you for your knowledge and passion for Manchester. As a Mancunian ‘cemented’ to the City (I think Morrissey once said that!) it was fantastic to hear the stories and to experience areas of the city I guess not many have.
