IF you’re thinking about adopting but aren’t sure where to start, Families that Last can help. They’re a voluntary adoption agency  that finds families for children, trains adoptive parents, and supports them for life.

The truth is, most people can adopt. You can be any sexuality, ethnicity or religion, and you don’t have to be married

They’re part of the voluntary adoption agency, After Adoption – a pioneering organisation that helps all those affected by adoption. And they’re currently looking for people all over the North West and Yorkshire who are considering taking the first step in becoming an adoptive parent.

If that’s you, you probably have questions you’d like to ask, and perhaps some doubts about how it all works.

Families that Last can offer reassurance on two of the most common concerns of potential adopters: Will I be allowed to adopt? And, will it take years and years to go through the adoption process?

The truth is, most people can adopt. You can be any sexuality, ethnicity or religion, and you don’t have to be married. The important thing is that you’re settled and supported enough in your own life to make space for someone else.

They’re looking for people who can make a commitment for life to a child or children. Most of the children they find families for are over two, in sibling groups, from an ethic minority. You can read about some of them here.

Secondly, although the process of placing a child is understandably thorough, it is a lot quicker and more straightforward than most people think.

Some potential adopters worry they won’t have any help with difficulties once the adoption process is complete. Families that Last offer post-adoptive support for you and your child for life, so you’re not left to deal with challenges alone.

The first step is to get in touch. It’s the start of what can be a challenging, but ultimately, rewarding experience.

Get in touch with Families that Last by calling 0300 456 2656, emailing familiesthatlast@afteradoption.org.uk or by requesting an information pack.
