It took three of us to hold it up
It’s all about balance. Here at Confidential we cover a wide range of food stories including community projects, charity dinners and innovations to reduce food waste – so cut us a bit of slack for rushing over to the Northern Quarter to get our chops round Yard & Coop’s new one foot high chicken burger.
It has always seemed perverse, this infatuation with towering piles of food when so many people are going hungry, but then you hear about a giant dish called the 'Massive Cock' and you just have to say: ‘Ok, but save us a table in a dark corner and make sure we’ve got enough napkins’.
This particular Massive Cock (mk III) can be found in Northern Quarter, an area of Manchester, which, to be fair, isn’t exactly short of massive c....
Yard & Coop love their chicken they do; Shropshire Gold, brined for 24 hours, with a secret recipe buttermilk coating, stacked (and leaning) at roughly a foot in height, this beast includes lashings of cheese sauce, hash browns, IPA battered onion rings, battered jalapenos, pickles, mustard, sriracha mayo, juicy tomatoes and some curly lettuce.
Clearly that wasn’t quite enough, so they also added a natty mini chicken burger garnish.
“We look forward to hearing what you guys think," says co-owner Carl Morris, "it's great to watch people tackle our MASSI..." Yes, yes ok Chris.
Anyway, it’s impossible to say anything about this oversized poultry construction without sounding like Roy Chubby Brown, so let’s just say it managed to fill three of us up quite happily for £18 and left us all well satisfied, with an ever so slightly greasy afterglow.
