THINK The Font is just a student bar? Think again... Whilst it’s undeniably great value, this is one venue that refuses to be pigeonholed, with something on offer for nigh on everyone. Whether you’re after (ridiculously) cheap cocktails, a quick lunch out of the office or a casual convene with friends, The Font has all bases covered. It even has over 100 craft beers and a series of tap takeovers.

Confidential decided to test it out one lunchtime and found several groups of office workers, already dispelling the ‘student-only’ myth. A couple sat talking over a pint in one of the venue’s various nooks and crannies, whilst a party was in full swing downstairs. Fortunately, The Font is like Dr Who’s tardis - a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside - which means that, even with a lot of customers, it doesn’t feel claustrophobic.

Hearty comforting classics are The Font’s speciality

It was time to get down to business, and how better to do that than with a cocktail or two (or three, or four?) As with food, the 60+ cocktail menu - priced in tiers - is extensive to say the least. We were a little dubious about the £2 concoctions but shouldn’t have been as they ended up being some of our favourites; particularly the indulgent Strawberries & Cream and Dr Pepper, which blends Pepsi with amaretto and cherry brandy. We also opted for a refreshing £3 Rhubarb & Ginger Collins, £4 Long Island Iced Tea (beware, it’s strong) and a £5 Purple Ronnie; a Font favourite, which comes served with a Vimto lollipop.

Onto the food, which again caters for every budget and every set of taste buds. Hearty comforting classics are The Font’s speciality, with signatures including the Fleetwood Mac (mac and cheese, with a gorgeously gooey consistency and the requisite crispy topping), Chilli Burrito (generous tortilla wrap served with Mexican street salad, seasoned nachos and a sour cream and chive dip) and the Aloha! Aloha! Pulled Pork Sandwich (a soft brioche bun loaded with Polynesian pulled pork, pineapple salsa and a dash of hot Sriracha sauce).

Gourmet burgers are another popular staple. Our visit leads us to recommend the Saffron Arancini Burger (a genius combination) and, if you’re feeling particularly peckish, The Southern Quarter All In (yes, it’s as enormous as it sounds). Whilst all burgers come with chips, 50p extra will bag you a portion of extremely moreish curly fries. Fries, skins and nachos can optionally be loaded with a range of toppings - from Boston beans to ham hock and, of course, Polynesian pulled pork - making for a great dish to share. If you can bear to share, that is.

The Font doesn’t slack on offers either: deals change regularly so keep a beady eye open. And, if the city centre’s not convenient, you’ll find branches in Fallowfield and Chorlton. Well, we did say it covers all bases: now to tackle some more of those cocktails...
