IT’S best known as a buzzing after-work and weekend venue. Happy hour 5-9pm every weekday and a pizza and pint for only £10 makes No 1 Watson Street first choice for getting together and satisfying those hunger pangs while you’re at it.

You can bet your bottom dollar we’ll be back

But did you know they do lunch as well? And it beats the likes of supermarkets and omnipresent high street chains hands down. All sandwiches are made fresh in-house - none of your pre-packaged factory malarkey - and those addicted to their No 1 craft pizzas (we don’t blame you) needn’t worry because they’re available all day.

The lunch menu, available 12-4pm, features five delicious sarnies at £5 including a hot or soft drink. A hungry Confidential recently popped in to give it a try, first plumping for meatballs on a sourdough baguette. Using locally sourced beef braised in homemade marinara sauce, topped with melted Monterey Jack cheese, this American-style sensation achieved the considerable feat of being as heavenly as it sounds.

It would be hard to live up to that but the grilled cheese bloomer made the cut. Creamy cannellini beans added texture while the homemade guacamole - avocado with a dash of red onion and plenty of seasoning - perfectly complemented the grilled Jack cheese and tangy tomato relish.

Our final sandwich choice was the charity beef and onion: £6 including drink, with 70p from each sold going to Foodinate, which provides meals to the Manchester homeless. Alongside philanthropy, other ingredients in this local favourite are prime beef, homemade red onion jam and a sharp English mustard. Needless to say, it hit the spot.

After scoffing down three pizzas as well, unfortunately we were too full to try the other two: roasted pepper on a gluten-free bagel and a bursting BLT classic. After our experience of the lunch menu so far, however, you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll be back. After all, a lunch that’s great value and great quality is a rarity indeed.
