TAMPOPO are starting off 2016 with plenty of good karma.
It’s one of Tampopo’s most popular dishes – a symbol of the vibrancy and joy that Vietnam has to offer
The restaurant has presented a cheque for £1850 to the Manchester-based humanitarian charity, Mines Advisory Group.
In 2015, pan-Asian trailblazers Tampopo established a charitable partnership with MAG, whereby 50p from every one of the Vietnamese Pho dishes they sold was donated to the organisation.
The cheque presented this month is Tampopo's latest fundraising total, representing the amount raised from July – December 2015, but, since the partnership was launched, Tampopo have raised £4822 for the charity.
Tampopo co-founder David Fox explained: 'We’re delighted to be handing this cheque over. It represents a small thank you to the countries that have inspired our restaurant, where often life isn’t as easy as it is for us here in the UK. If serving up Pho at Tampopo in Manchester, can help save a life in Vietnam, or anywhere overseas affected by the consequences of war, well, that’s fantastic as far as we’re concerned.”
Pho is one of Vietnam’s most famous (and delicious) culinary exports - sliced rump steak or chicken breast is served with ho fun noodles in a clear broth scented with fresh Asian herbs, star anise & lime.
It’s one of Tampopo’s most popular dishes – a symbol of the vibrancy and joy that Vietnam has to offer, and the perfect dish to dedicate to MAG, which works in many of the areas that bring us the classic dishes that Tampopo has made famous in Manchester, including Vietnam.
With support from donors like Tampopo, during 2015 MAG:
- Made more than 30 million square metres of land safe from landmines and unexploded bombs.
- Removed and destroyed over 200,000 deadly items so they can no longer injure or kill people.
- Delivered more than 23,000 risk education sessions helping people to stay safe until the land is cleared of danger.
- Cut up over 11,000 guns, taking them out of circulation for good.
All of this activity has benefited over 1.4million people, so that they can safely grow crops, walk to school, access water, get to market, and live without fear and danger.
MAG's vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict. Their work includes clearing landmines, destroying weapons and making land safe after war. The Deansgate-based charity has helped to make daily life safer for millions of children and their families in war-torn countries, and shares a Nobel Peace Prize for its work to ban landmines.
Next time you chow down on a bowl of pho at Tampopo, just think of the people less fortunate than you and then think of the good you, Tampopo and the Mines Advisory Group are doing to put a stop to the damage done by conflict.
