From superstar hotdogs to Kool-Aid pickles, The Font's new menu has it all
It may be best known for great value cocktails and good time vibes, but to overlook The Font’s food would be a crying shame. Why? Because it’s blimmin’ delicious (we’ve tried).
Where possible, everything is homemade - from sauces to salsas and even sausages - while burger patties are made to The Font’s own recipe at the local butcher and delivered fresh each day.
Launched on 30 August, the new food menu is a beauty: combining The Font signature classics with some great newcomers. Veggies and vegans needn’t miss out either, with some great new meat-free dishes.
Here are some of the highlights…
Rueben burger
This towering delight of 6oz beef, pastrami and oozy Swiss cheese comes topped with sauerkraut, Russian dressing and even a Kool-Aid pickle - a US tradition which The Font have unabashedly pinched. Because gherkins marinated in cherry or grape Kool-Aid taste a lot better than you think (trust us). Add a fresh bun and The Font’s own recipe beef patty, straight from the local butcher, and you have yourself a belter.
Mexican Super Bowl salad (vegan)
If you like your salads with a kick, this spicy number may be the ticket. Mixed leaves are loaded with rice, refried beans, squash, jalapenos, roquito peppers and avocado salsa - served up with a side of tortilla chips. You’ll find pico de gallo in there too; a Mexican salsa made from chopped tomato, onion, cilantro, fresh serranos, salt and lime juice. You can have this healthy dish alone (vegan) or teamed with Cajun chicken or Creole panko halloumi for an extra £2.50.
Snoop Doggy Dog(g)
The Font’s own recipe sausage, seasoned with pickled red cabbage and horseradish, then sprinkled with juicy short rib chunks...this is a superstar hotdog. The short rib is slow-cooked for five hours, making it extra juicy, and the dog sits regally on its bed of fries. Our recommendation? Upgrade to curly fries for 75p - trust us, they’re totally worth it. Big appetite? You can even switch to Mac ‘n’ cheese for £2.
Tokyo katsu chicken fries
Talking of fabulous fries, The Font have a whole section dedicated to them. From Polynesian pulled pork to melted mozzarella balls, you’ll find weird and wonderful toppings galore. This Japanese-inspired newcomer features shichimi chilli panko crusted chicken breast, sliced and topped with pickled cucumber, and The Font’s very own katsu curry sauce. Oh yes.
Vegan breakfast (vegan)
Why should a good fry up be reserved for the carnivores? This meat-free meal includes hash browns, truffle- marinated mushrooms, avocado, fried tomato, refried beans, toasted sourdough, garlic confit oil and vegan sausages that do a pretty great job of imitating the real thing. All The Font breakfasts are cooked to order and available 11-5pm so fear not if you miss the morning slot.
Gourmet veggie burger (vegan)
Another vegan version of a much-loved classic, this homemade falafel burger is topped with hummus (again made in-house) and pickled red cabbage - all served up in a spinach bun. As with the Rueben, all gourmet burgers come with chips, dill pickle and coleslaw to boot.
Mushroom grilled cheese sandwich (veggie)
It faced tough competition but this was up there with our favourite new menu dishes. Not one, but two types of cheese (Monterey Jack and provolone), mushrooms infused with truffle oil and thyme, grilled sourdough…it’s just ridiculously good. Suitable for veggies, this sandwich sensation is served up with coleslaw and those famous Kool-Aid pickles.
