MARCELLO Distefano, managing director of San Carlo Group restaurants, is in training for his toughest challenge yet.

I'm both a little daunted and excited about taking on such an extreme challenge

Saturday 14 September sees Marcello, a familiar face at celeb haunt San Carlo on King Street, set off on a gruelling five day physical challenge called 'On the Road to Alp D’Huez' in aid of The Christie Charity.

It's part of the On The Road campaign to raise £1million towards a new mobile chemotherapy unit. Marcello will cycle over 650kms through five of the toughest stages of the Tour de France from 14 to 18 September.

The challenge will be a test of mind and stamina. In preparation Marcello has stepped up his usual training routine and this month saw him complete his first triathlon.

Commenting on the five day cycle, Marcello said: “It’s been a busy and successful year for my business, which is often challenging, but I have to say I’m both a little daunted and excited about taking on such an extreme challenge.

“I hope people will get behind what we’re doing and not forget why we’re doing it. Every donation, whatever its size, will count towards getting the world class care of The Christie Charity closer to patients’ homes in the North West.”
