Radical Figures: Post-war British Figurative Painting

THE RADICAL Figures exhibition features 13 key works by major British artists including; Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Michael Andrews and Euan Uglow, whose work is currently on loan from the Arts Council Collection.
These are on display together with popular works by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and David Hockney from the collections of Manchester Art Gallery and the Whitworth Art Gallery.
The paintings on display showcase work by The School of London, a group of loosely associated painters. Each of these artists explores the representation of the human figure to make it relevant in a post Second World War world.
The artists studied the art of the Renaissance and of Impressionism, and also were being influenced by pre-War British artists such as Walter Sickert.
Together, these artist’s used new ways to create realist paintings. Today, the School of London artists are recognised as among the most important British artists of their time.
Exhibition will run from Saturday 16 March 2013 - Sunday 16 March 2014 with Free Entry.
