Sheffield's JÖRO to launch ‘grocerant’

The owners of one of Sheffield’s coolest restaurants, Jöro, have announced plans for a new addition to their hospitality paddock.

The umlauted, Shöp, is described by owners Luke French and Stacey Sherwood-French as a ‘grocerant’. Whilst the term might not ring a bell over here, it’s a pretty big thing in the US and Europe, basically referring to a restaurant in a supermarket.

Shöp will combine a multi-vendor food offering akin to a foodhall as well as an upmarket grocers selling fruit, vegetables, meats and other locally-made and premium artisan products, all carefully curated by Luke and Stacey themselves. Shöp will be part of the redevelopment of the 150-year-old Oughtibridge Paper Mill, a historic building in Sheffield which will also feature a co-working space.

A lesser spotted grocerant

A shop is the next hospitality step for husband and wife team Luke and Stacey. Alongside destination restaurant JÖRO, the duo also operate robata grill concept Konjö in Sheffield’s Cutlery Works and House of JÖRO, a four bedroom boutique hotel a stone’s throw from the namesake restaurant.

A smaller Shöp - selling select products including wines, beers, organic fruit and veg and premium ingredients - already exists in Kelham Island’s Cutlery Works. But the new venture will bring this concept and then some to a historic Sheffield site, with Shöp expected to launch at the mixed-use site in Spring 2023.

Commenting on the project, Luke, who represented the North East and Yorkshire on Great British Menu last year said:

"We are so excited to be involved with the repurposing on this incredible site and we cannot wait to open the doors of our new concept. We are passionate about the region and are proud to showcase a lot of food and drink from Sheffield as well as the county of Yorkshire. In addition, though, we will be offering quality items from further afield, such as wines from Sagar + Wilde, Wildfarmed flour, single species charcoal from Oxfordshire, hand-made skincare products, Neal’s Yard Cheeses and much more."

Stacey adds:

"Extending our group of hospitality businesses into retail feels like a natural step for us, particularly after we started selling products online during lockdown. Our customers are frequently asking us where we buy our produce and products from – supplies that the public can’t easily access or might not be familiar with – and so it seemed like a logical move to grow our collection of businesses in this direction."

"We are proud of our own-brand gin and wine, along with our chef tool kits that we believe will appeal to consumers. We also plan to host events at night, which will include wine and cheese evenings too."
