THE TEAM behind Kosmonaut bar on Tariff Street are set to open a new Northern Quarter venture just off Stevenson Square at 26 Lever Street (opposite Fred Aldous) in 2015.

PLY is not the only new venture to be setting up at the 26 Lever Street address, with another new bar planned for the basement of the building.

PLY bar and restaurant will see the redevelopment of a 5,500sq ft ground floor unit at the address to create ‘a bright creative multi-purpose venue'.

Director Joe Fearnhead said: “PLY is a fresh new concept, completely distinct from the current Northern Quarter offering with some show-stopping elements. It’s a flexible space, with defined areas designed to cater for drinkers, diners, coffee meetings and lazy afternoons.”

Details remain vague with operators declaring via social media: ‘We’re building something different, something special’. Let's hope the name refers to ply as in plying trade, not ply as in plywood.

PLY is not the only new venture to be setting up at the 26 Lever Street address, with another new bar planned for the basement of the building. Steve Pilling, owner of Liquorice bar on King Street and Damson restaurant at MediaCityUK is soon to open Guilty By Association with bar partner Mark Whyte in the old Paris Wholesale unit.

If PLY goes the way of Kosmonaut, the operators are onto a winner.

The Tariff Street bar, opened in August 2012, and quickly established itself as a city favourite at the more serene easterly end of the Northern Quarter, merging beers, cocktails, food, changing art exhibitions and a fiercely challenged ping-pong league on its way to scooping a brace of ‘Best Bar’ awards last year.
