MANCHESTER is one of the cities competing in this year’s competition to find the Curry Capital of Britain.

However, it will face particularly stiff competition from Bradford which has carried off the curry crown for the past two years, making it a three-time winner.

Hoping to clinch the title for Manchester will be EastzEast and Zaika in the city centre, Mughli on Curry Mile and Desi Lounge in Failsworth.

Last year, a quarter of a million foodie fans voted for the winner and this year, more cities than ever are attempting to curry favour with the judges and secure the public’s votes. The awards, which are sponsored by hungryhouse.co.uk, are now in their eleventh year.

Curry 2Celebrating the CurryCo-founder of the company, Shane Lake said: “Like everyone else, we’re big curry fans so we’re delighted to be involved in this year’s campaign. With so many fantastic curry restaurants in Britain, it’s tough to choose the best but the passion of the British voters will ensure a worthy winner is crowned.”

Founded by food historian and writer, Peter Grove, the Curry Capital of Britain is part of National Curry Week and showcases the cultural richness of Britain's largest cities, celebrating the curry in all its forms.

Each participating city will be represented by four local restaurants. Hoping to clinch the title for Manchester will be EastzEast and Zaika in the city centre, Mughli on Curry Mile and Desi Lounge in Failsworth.

Zaika: Hoping to Become Curry Champions

Before the winner is announced, the competing restaurants hold fundraising events throughout National Curry Week (7-14 October) to raise money for the charity Find Your Feet which works in remote areas of India, Nepal, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Their work helps poor rural families to grow enough food to feed their children and send them to school as well as pay for basic medicines. They put emphasis on empowering the families, especially the women, to make their voices heard on important issues such as accessing vital services like clean water.

The winning city will be announced on October 13. To vote for Manchester, or to vote for any of the cities, click here.

There will also be an award for the best curry takeaway this year to recognise the places that prepare authentic dishes to be enjoyed on the comfort of your own sofa.
