THESE are the twenty most read food and drink stories of 2012.

They might surprise people, they did us.

What's interesting is the range of stories here from proper restaurants such as L'Entrecote via pub crawls to tiny places such as Slice in the Northern Quarter.

We published well over 350 food and drink related stories over the year, but one story absolutely smashed the rest to crumbs - we used Google Analytics to measure the reads by the way.

The preview of Tops, a massive and very ornate buffet restaurant on Portland Street, had the highest number of unique reads of any of our food and drink stories with 34,000 people popping on to the site to give it the once over. This is six thousand more than the capacity of Bolton's Reebok Stadium.

Almost Famous Burgers, a very different beast to Tops, came second.

This only tells part of the story though.

If the various stories and reviews of Jamie's Italian on King Street are aggregated - four in total, including one about the stupidity of the media (click here) - then the total is a frankly astonishing 75,000 reads. What a popular Jamie he is. As popular as the total capacity of Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium.

What's interesting is the range of stories here from proper restaurants such as L'Entrecote via pub crawls to tiny places such as Slice in the Northern Quarter.

Our readers obviously are keen for a distinctive food and drink voice regardless of the type of venue. Sometimes they're keen for a very, very distinctivevoice  indeed.

It was good to see several thousand people fell for our April Fools' Day food and drink story. Cast your eyes down the list below and guess which one that was.
