ACCLAIMED historian, author and broadcaster Professor Michael Wood revisits the story of Alexander the Great in a free public lecture at Manchester Museum on 15 September.

Wood is a gripping and engaging public speaker and for anyone with an ounce of interest in the grand themes of history this will be a fascinating occasion

Manchester-born and raised Michael Wood retraced the conquest of much of Western Asia by Alexander in his 1998 BBC documentary series In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great. He was appointed the University of Manchester’s Professor in Public History in September 2013.

In this lecture he will be updating the Alexander story with new material from the currently beleaguered areas of Syria and Northern Iraq, and illustrating his talk with pictures of the regions Alexander visited, along with clips from his documentary series.

Confidential hopes he fulminates on the obscene nature of ISIS (or ISL) and their desire to make a mono-culture of terror in an area that has been the cradle of so many ideas, beliefs and cultures.

But let's not put words in his mouth.

What is certain is that Wood is a gripping and engaging public speaker and for anyone with an ounce of interest in the grand themes of history this will be a fascinating occasion.
