A NEW fly-on-the-wall documentary series following the ups-and-down of Manchester’s best known hotel, The Midland, is to air on Channel 5 this June (tbc).

Behind the walls and doors is a labyrinth of floors and corridors like a grand ocean liner and that’s not to mention the hundreds of staff

Commissioned by Channel 5’s Emma Westcott, four-part series Inside Manchester's Midland Hotel, will unearth 'what life is really like' inside one of the country’s most celebrated hotels, through the eyes of its staff; from the laundry room to the front desk.

Cameras will also follow the hotel's General Manager Mike Magrane, as he mingles with an eclectic mix of guests including ladies that lunch, businessmen, wedding parties and football supporters.

Magrane (a character himself) said: “The new documentary will provide an insight into one of the UK landmark hotels

“We’ve opened the doors of our Grade II listed building to give the public a glimpse into the people – and characters – that make our award-winning restaurants, renowned conference and events facilities and world-class leisure offering so distinctive.”

Since 1903, Manchester’s Midland Hotel, has welcomed prestigious guests,  providing the setting for when Mr Rolls met Mr Royce and decided to start making 'nice' cars. Winston Churchill and General Patten have all been entertained at the hotel and the Beatles were turned away from the 'posh' French Restaurant because the manager didn't like the cut of their moptop jib.

“We are thrilled to tell the modern day story of this iconic hotel, getting to know the people that keep this place alive through adventures and struggles,” says Emma Westcott, Commissioner for Factual at Channel 5.

Alan Brown, of production company Chocolate Media adds: “It’s extraordinary to get the chance to film inside because what you see as a guest is only a part of the hotel. Behind the walls and doors is a labyrinth of floors and corridors like a grand ocean liner and that’s not to mention the hundreds of staff. We’ve met some great characters that are not just super professional but boast warmth and a sense of humour that reflects the city.”
