FOLLOWING on from this year’s successful event at the Opera House, the Royal Exchange has been chosen as the next venue for the annual Manchester Theatre Awards.
The country’s second city of theatre should be recognised and honoured for its continuing achievements
The awards are the most important of their kind outside London. Chosen by a panel of nine independent regional theatre critics, the awards celebrate the work of North West talent as well as recognising visiting productions.
After spending the year watching scores of productions at a range of venues in and around the city, the critics select around twenty categories for the awards. The coveted awards will cover best performers, new plays, design, opera, and dance as well as several gongs for the city and the wider region’s expanding fringe theatre scene.
A spokesperson for the panel said that both they and Manchester’s theatre venues were “determined that the country’s second city of theatre should be recognised and honoured for its continuing achievements, especially at a time when the economy creates threats to the region’s rich cultural legacy.”
The winners will be revealed at a glittering awards ceremony at the Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre in March 2014.
