THE increasingly popular Manchester Day, celebrating everything great about this city, returns on Sunday 14 June.
It’s a day the whole city joins in a magical celebration of all things Mancunian
Now in its sixth year, Manchester Day has in previous years celebrated the city’s status as the world’s first industrial city; the birthplace of the computer, atomic theory and graphene.
The theme this year – Game On! – celebrates the idea that games have influenced and shaped modern Manchester.
A 2000 strong, one mile long parade with a dazzling array of giant characters and vibrant costumes will set off from Castlefield's Liverpool Road at 1pm on Sunday, Here's the route:
- The parade leaves Liverpool Road at 1pm before taking a left onto Deansgate.
- The parade will travel down Deansgate before taking a right onto Peter Street and a left onto Mount Street.
- From Mount Street the first of the parade should reach Albert Square by 1.15pm.
- The parade will move through Albert Square and left onto John Dalton Street before returning to Deansgate by Katsouris deli.
- Reaching the end of Deansgate the parade will take a right at Harvey Nics and head into Exchange Square outside the Corn Exchange around 1.45pm.
- The tail of the parade should reach Exchange Square by 2.30pm.
Manchester Day will this year welcome Pixel – a sentient, highly advanced robotic explorer mascot who arrived in the city the day of last year’s event. Falling instantly for Manchester, Pixel has apparently spent the last year researching amazing facts about the city; including this belter:
@PixelMcrDay: "Manchester People's History museum was the first UK public building made from Corten steel"
In celebration of this year’s theme the Town Hall will be hosting The Manchester Games Room - a two day gaming event bringing together the whole spectrum of gaming from traditional table-top board games to the best of UK and local computer game development.
The Games Room will plug in on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June (10am – 6pm each day) when gamers will have the chance to test their nerve at some of the newest indie video game titles and unusual board games!
Model-makers from Aardman Studios will be dropping into Central Library from 12 – 4pm on Sunday 14 June, a programme of free and futuristic drop-in sessions will be on offer throughout the iconic Central Library building.
Councillor Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said:
“It’s a day the whole city joins in a magical celebration of all things Mancunian. It’s one of the most exciting events in the UK and certainly one of the best loved in Manchester's world class events diary. It promises, as always, to be a spectacular day, the range of 'Game On' activities will make it even more special and I can't wait to join in the celebrations."
