The Preswitch supermarket sign has been temporarily rebranded for the Oasis reunion tour
It’s not uncommon for large consumer-facing businesses to temporarily rebrand or build a campaign around a trending topic to remain relatable to its audience.
Affordable supermarket giant Aldi did just that, jumping on Oasis reunion bandwagon by changing the name of its Bury New Road store to ‘Aldeh’ and embracing the Mancunian pronunciation of the German-born brand.
Now, as the Manchester leg of the sell-out, era-defining tour approaches its final few dates, a petition has been launched to make the rebrand permanent for the Prestwich site.
Since the humorous sign was erected, it’s become a popular talking point amongst the general Mancunian public and avid Oasis fans, with many flocking to the grocery store to take a photo with it. Fans of the gag have wasted no time in marking the sign as a cultural landmark on Google, even giving it stellar five-star reviews.
It’s become so widely appreciated that local Manc Ella Curtis has created a petition urging the supermarket to keep the signage as it is long after the tour is over, as a tribute to Manchester’s cultural legacy to music.
Ella’s petition explains how the sign might have started out as a temporary campaign, but it’s come to mean something much more to the city and its people.
The supermarket has since issued a response on social media saying: ‘Boss said we also need 10,000 likes and a comment from one of the Gallaghers’.
The petition can be signed here.
