Get a better understanding of the process from people who have built their families with Adoption Counts

Adoption can be a dream come true. Parts of the process can also be a bit challenging. Discover what adopting a child with Adoption Counts is really like, from the people who have done it.

Adoption Counts is your local adoption agency, covering Cheshire East, Manchester, Salford, Stockport and Trafford. When you’re doing the groundwork and researching your options, chances are, your local council might well point you in their direction.

You don’t have to be some sort of superhero to adopt and no-one is looking for perfection

Samuel and Jonathan adopted with Adoption Counts as they lived in Manchester and were very positive about the support they received: “We felt very supported by our social worker throughout. Also, Adoption Counts provides lots of extra services such as top-up training sessions so we felt very informed about the whole process.”

However, adopting a child is not an easy process to go through. Another parent who has adopted a child with Adoption Counts, Melissa, described the assessment process as both ‘meaningful’ yet ‘intrusive’ whilst Sean and Alex found it ‘daunting’ but appreciated the ‘open discussions’.

The assessment takes time, but it’s a very important part of the process, making sure you would be a good adoptive parent. At the same time, you don’t have to be some sort of superhero to adopt and no-one is looking for perfection. That doesn’t exist. You just need to be able to give a child the love they need.

Different people find different parts of the adoption journey harder than others. For Samuel and Jonathan those were “the periods of time when we were just waiting, such as waiting for statutory checks to come through or waiting to be matched with a child. It’s all out of your hands and all you can do is wait and hope.”

Despite the emotional rollercoaster, these adoptive parents all agree that adoption is something they wouldn’t change for the world. ‘Rewarding’ is a word that crops up a lot. The love for their children shines through in everything they say.
