FROM 7 May Phillip Pullman’s 1999 children’s story, ‘I Was A Rat!’ comes to The Lowry. The play tells the story of Roget who turns up on the door step of married couple Bob and Joan proclaiming “I was a rat!”.
The production combines fantasy, fun and adventure, slowly revealing its connection to a famous fairy tale.
Pullman’s dark children’s tale was adapted for the stage by Teresa Ludovico, artistic director or Teatro Kismet in Bari, Southern Italy. This co-production brings together the visual skills of Teatro Kismet's creative team, with a cast of British actors.
Teresa explained her love of Pullman's work as the drive behind the adaptation: "I have wanted to bring one of Philip Pullman's stories to the stage for some time, because I find his work very close to my poetic style of theatre. It is a theatre style that strives to address both young and adult audiences".
This production comes after the success of His Dark Materials adaptation in 2009. The production combines fantasy, fun and adventure, slowly revealing its connection to a famous fairy tale.
Former Billy Elliot star Fox Jackson-Keen, leads the cast as Roger the ratty page boy on a quest to discover who or what he is. The cast includes Tyrone Huggins and Lorna Gayle as Bob and Joan, as well as a number of others taking on multiple roles.
