AS daffodil buds start peeping and the wildlife gets amorous, The Friends of Platt Fields and Manchester Indian Association will be holding their annual celebration of Holi (the Hindu festival of colours). This springtime event takes place in Platt Fields Park on Saturday 6 April between 1pm and 4pm and is free and open to all.
Old clothes, preferably white, are recommended if you want to join in with the paint party.
This is the fourth time Holi has been celebrated as a public festival in Platt Fields Park and, weather permitting, 500 people are expected to join in the celebrations this year.
Young and old will be able to daub each other with powder paint in vibrant colours, changing their white clothes into mini art galleries while dancing to live and recorded music. Old clothes, preferably white, are recommended if you want to join in with the paint party. There will be more live performances of music and dance inside the Lakeside centre where the stage will have an Indian backdrop made from saris.
Gujiya and sev, Indian snacks traditionally eaten around Holi, will be prepared by Anand’s on Wilmslow Road. Other savoury vegetarian Indian food will be available, as well as English food, including hot cross buns.
Children will be able to take part in a range of spring activities with their parents including: making chocolate nests; playing recycling games; sowing seeds to take home.
