IT’S BEST known for its succulent steaks and premium dining - but Hawksmoor isn’t all about the restaurant. Dropping in at the bar is welcomed, and you can even take advantage of the entire menu whilst sat here. If you’re after something more casual to accompany your tipple(s), however, the bar menu does just the trick. Think short rib sandwiches with bone marrow gravy, fresh lobster roll on a soft toasted bun and triple cooked chips on the side.
That golden crispy coating belying a fluffy interior is so worth the sin...
Confidential popped down to sample what’s on offer; starting with a cocktail, of course, which we covered more extensively last month here (someone’s got to do it...) This time, with the focus on food, we got stuck right in.
First up, the snacks. Now you can have olives or roasted nuts but, ravenous as we were, it was short rib nuggets for us. These Scotch egg lookalikes pair prime beef, sourced from local supplier Ginger Pig, with a melted mild cheddar called Ogleshield. Simply scrumptious.
Poutine was another winning choice, chips drizzled with soft stringy Westcombe curds and gravy to boot. Originating in Canada, this effective little dish has fast caught on elsewhere and it’s not hard to see why: tasty, filling and great for a hangover. If you fancy something a bit bigger than a snack, poutine is also available in sandwich form; along with herb-fed chicken and a fried egg.
Onto the burger section, where we tried this season’s ‘third burger’. Whilst Hawksmoor Burger and Kimchi Burger (described as ‘pop art in a roll’) are permanent fixtures, the last option changes seasonally to allow for greater versatility. At the moment, it’s a chicken sensation: southern fried chicken with guacamole, sriracha mayonnaise and a beansprout, carrot and coriander salad (main image).
Naturally, we ordered this with triple cooked chips: one of three sides, also including Doddington Caesar and vinegar slaw. Yes, they’re naughty but that golden crispy coating belying a fluffy interior is so worth the sin...
Add in the elegant Edwardian surroundings and it’s little wonder Hawksmoor scooped ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in the Manchester Food & Drink Awards 2016. Hear hear.
