We delve into Chorlton’s fine dinery Gray’s Larder
FINE dining in the suburbs is now officially a thing, and Gray’s Larder in Chorlton should be top of your grab-a-tram-ticket-and-go-to list.
Cosy and laid-back, with a stylish shabby-chic décor, the bijou space is perfect for couples, friends and small groups looking for some well-prepared food and tasty tipples.
With a regularly changing menu, you can be sure of locally sourced and seasonal super-fresh produce with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Gray’s Larder also can boast a menu that is 95% gluten free and there’s a good amount of choice for everyone. Pick starter, main and dessert, or a variety of nibbles and small plates to share.
We stuck with the traditional three courses, and kicked off with three picks from the Little Tastes From The Larder section: potted shrimps with amazing homemade soda bread and a shallot salad; lamb polpette meatballs in a rich tomato sauce with sultanas and Parmesan shavings, and everyone’s favourite dish du jour, delicious deconstructed cauliflower cheese.
Out of the Everything Else mains selection, the beetroot risotto with blue cheese was not only great on the palate, but also beautiful to the eye – bright fuchsia pink! The fish was fantastic too, and the Mediterranean-influenced pan-fried hake fillet with crispy shallots contrasted nicely with the sea bass in a Thai-spiced broth.
For posh puddings, think flourless cake and artisan ice cream – although we went for the lovely and light lemon posset with homemade fennel biscotti and straight-off-the-cane raspberries. A perfect sweet treat to round off the meal.
Gray’s Larder is a lesson in how neighbourhood dining should be done: fresh, fabulous and friendly.
